January flowers

This month the dahlias are beginning to take centre stage. They haven't bushed up to the stage where they flop and become ungainly, but they are covered with lots of fresh looking flower heads and glossy leaves. The sweet peas are soldiering on and I pick the blooms every couple of days for scented posies for the kitchen and bathroom. Special mention goes to the lemon tree - it's finally recovered from its winter pruning and has put out many little fragrant clusters of blooms. It's scenting the whole area by the front door and the best part is, if I leave the bedroom window open the beautiful fragrance drifts in.

Also, I bought a hydrangea. I didn't need it, especially since my mum grew me a cutting of a lovely white hydrangea that I already put in a white pot to brighten up this dark corner.

I didn't need it, but look at these beautiful tiny pink petals blushed with green. Imagine how stunning they will be in vases. And I didn't even have to think too long to decide on a place for it in the garden. The white one will stay in the pot, but I'll plant this one in the ground so it can grow into a nice big bush that I can pick like mad.

What's blooming in your garden this month? I'm linking up to Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day as usual.

  1. Ruth I am impressed you still have a few (if any) sweet peas left in your garden. Love love love hydrangeas (you can never have enough). Dahlias are brilliant, what a great post, thanks

    1. Yes they haven't succumbed to the heat yet! I usually let them self seed and they come up when they are ready, so maybe they just really like their position. I agree about the hydrangeas!

  3. Love your dahlias, all the burgundy and pink in your photo collage go so well together. I have never grown sweet peas, my garden hasn't really got a space for it, but I am redesigning (again!) this summer, might find a small corner where some peas can grow next year!

    1. My summer garden is rather pink isn't it? I like it that way though! I'm sure you'll be able to fit in some sweet peas somewhere, you won't regret it if you do!

  4. Your flower collages are beautiful. I particularly enjoy your bouquets in the center! And I can only dream of having a lemon tree in my front yard. Sounds wonderful!

    1. Thanks Laura. The lemon tree was there when we bought the house so I can't take credit for its enormous size and productivity. I just try to keep it going well - the neighbours would never forgive me if it died!

  6. Thank you for posting your beautiful flowers. I live in a northern part of the United States. All that is blooming right now is snow. Only three more months to spring blooms.
